Dacia Logan I (2004-2012) – batteries

When selecting a battery for the Dacia Logan I produced between 2004 and 2012, it’s essential to consider both the technical requirements of your specific engine version as well as the climate in which you operate your car, your driving habits, and your budget. The Logan I is a practical and popular car, especially in Central and Eastern Europe, and its straightforward design means that battery replacement is usually quite simple. However, choosing the right battery is key to ensuring reliable starts, optimal performance of electrical systems, and extended battery life.

For the petrol engine versions without the Start-Stop system, which comprise models like the 1.2 16V, 1.2 16V LPG, 1.4, 1.4 MPI LPG, 1.6, 1.6 16V, and 1.6 MPI 85, the recommended battery technology is the traditional lead-acid (flooded) type. The capacity range for these models should be between 44 and 58 ampere-hours (Ah), with a cold cranking amperage (CCA) ranging from 360 up to 540 amps. This is sufficient to provide enough power for starting the engine, even in colder weather, and to support the car’s basic electrical demands. As for fitting, these engines are commonly found with standard battery trays, so you don’t have to worry about unusual dimensions.

Some examples of compatible battery models for these petrol engines include Bosch S30 02, Bosch S40 02, Bosch S50 02, Exide EA530, Exide EB500, Exide EC440, Halfords HCB 012, Lucas LP012, Lucas LP079, Lucas LS012, Varta B19, Varta C22, and Varta C30. Remember, these are only examples of suitable models; there are many others on the market that will meet these specifications. When shopping for a new battery, always verify the dimensions and terminal layout to ensure a proper fit in your specific Logan. You may notice that some batteries like the Varta B19 and Varta C22 are widely available in Europe and are known for their reliability and decent warranty coverage.

If your Logan is equipped with the 1.5 dCi diesel engine, the requirements are slightly different. Diesel engines generally require higher starting currents, so you should look for a battery with a capacity in the range of 60 to 62 Ah and a cold cranking amperage from 540 to 600 amps. A crucial detail for this version is the battery’s height: the battery compartment in this diesel variant is designed for a lower-profile battery, specifically with a height of around 175 mm. Failing to observe this can result in the battery not fitting under the bonnet or the terminals making contact with the hood, which can be dangerous.

For the 1.5 dCi, some suitable battery models are Bosch S40 04, Bosch S50 04, Exide EA612, Exide EB602, Halfords HCB 075, Lucas LP075, Lucas LS075, Varta D21, and Varta D59. Again, these are just examples, and the market offers many other options with the right specifications. Pay special attention to both the technical parameters and the physical size, especially the height, when making your selection for the diesel version.

An interesting fact is that, unlike many modern cars, the Dacia Logan I from these years does not use a Start-Stop system in any version. This means there’s no need to invest in EFB (Enhanced Flooded Battery) or AGM (Absorbent Glass Mat) batteries, which are more expensive and designed for cars with frequent engine restarts. Sticking with a traditional lead-acid battery will be perfectly adequate and more cost-effective for the Logan I.

When replacing your battery, it’s always a good idea to check the state of your battery terminals and clean them if necessary. Corroded terminals can lead to poor electrical contact and starting problems, regardless of how good your new battery is. Also, consider the age of your existing battery; most standard lead-acid batteries last between three and five years, but extreme temperatures or frequent short trips can shorten this lifespan.

Finally, keep in mind that battery technology continues to evolve. Some manufacturers are now offering batteries with improved vibration resistance and longer shelf life, which can be beneficial if your Logan is often driven on rough roads. However, always prioritize the correct technical parameters over additional features. In summary, for most Dacia Logan I models from 2004-2012, a reliable lead-acid battery with the correct capacity, CCA, and dimensions will serve you well. Always double-check your car’s manual or consult a trusted mechanic if in doubt, and enjoy the peace of mind that comes from knowing your Logan will start reliably in all conditions.
