For the Opel Astra H from 2004 and onwards, selecting the right battery largely depends on the engine type and technical specifications. In this model, without a Start-Stop system, lead-acid batteries are recommended for their durability and affordability.
Gasoline engines with a capacity of 1.2 and 1.4 liters require batteries with a capacity of 41 to 52 Ah, with a starting current of 360-520 A. It’s important to choose a battery with a reduced height of 175 mm, ensuring proper fit under the hood. Examples of compatible models include Bosch S30 01, Exide EA472, and Varta A17. These batteries can provide stable electrical performance, even in colder temperatures.
For larger gasoline engines, like the 1.6 or 1.8, batteries should have slightly higher specifications – a capacity of 60-62 Ah and a starting current of 540-600 A. Paying attention to reduced-height batteries (175 mm) helps avoid mounting issues. Suitable models include Bosch S40 04, Exide EA612, and Varta D21.
For diesel engines, such as the 1.3 CDTI and 1.7 CDTI, batteries with similar specifications, namely a capacity of 60-62 Ah and a starting current of 540-600 A, are recommended. Batteries like Bosch S40 04, Lucas LS075, and Varta D21 provide adequate starting current for diesel engines, which require extra support on winter mornings.
The 1.9 CDTI engines, including the 16V variant, have the highest battery requirements. The capacity should range from 71 to 74 Ah, with a starting current of 670-750 A. Reduced-height batteries are recommended for these engines. Compatible models include Bosch S40 07, Exide EA722, and Varta E38.
Regularly checking the battery’s condition and charge level, especially before winter, helps prevent starting issues. Choosing the right battery ensures reliable vehicle performance and enhances the comfort of daily driving.

What ideal battery plate is good for my 2009 Opel Astra H model, 1.4 Petrol Engine capacity
For your 2009 Opel Astra H 1.4, a battery size of 207x175x175 mm (length x width x height) should fit. The capacities of such batteries range from about 40 Ah to 50 Ah. I would choose one of the batteries: Bosch S4001, Exide EB442, or Varta B18. Best regards.
