Choosing the right battery for the Mercedes-Benz B-Class W246 (model years from 2011 onwards) is crucial to ensure reliable operation, especially given the advanced technology and start-stop systems present in these vehicles. The W246 B-Class is equipped with both petrol and diesel engines, and regardless of the engine variant, the requirements for compatible batteries remain quite consistent throughout the range, which can help owners simplify their search for a replacement battery.
The primary consideration when selecting a battery for the B-Class W246 is the presence of the Start-Stop system. This system, designed to reduce fuel consumption and emissions by automatically shutting down and restarting the engine at stops, places higher demands on the car’s battery than traditional systems. Conventional lead-acid batteries are not suitable for vehicles with Start-Stop technology, as they are not built to withstand frequent cycling and the high power draw required for repeated engine starts. As a result, vehicles like the B 180, B 200, B 250, and the diesel variants such as the B 180 CDI or B 220 CDI, all require Absorbent Glass Mat (AGM) batteries. AGM batteries are specifically engineered to handle the high load and rapid charge/discharge cycles associated with modern Start-Stop systems, ensuring longevity and performance.
In terms of technical specifications, the B-Class W246 models with Start-Stop require a battery with a capacity of 70 to 72 Ah (ampere-hours) and a cold cranking amperage (CCA) between 720 and 760 A. Matching both the capacity and the CCA is essential to guarantee the battery can deliver enough power during cold starts and frequent start-stop cycles, especially during harsh winters or heavy urban driving. Choosing a battery outside these ranges may result in improper functioning of the Start-Stop system, reduced battery life, or even electronic malfunctions.
For those looking for specific examples of suitable batteries, there are several models that fit the requirements for the Mercedes-Benz B-Class W246. Brands like Bosch, Exide, Varta, Halfords, and Lucas offer AGM batteries within the required capacity and CCA ranges. Some of the commonly recommended, compatible models include Bosch S5A 08, Exide EK700, Exide EK720, Halfords AGM 096, Lucas LF096, and Varta E39. These are not the only choices available, but they serve as reliable examples that meet the technical specifications needed for the W246 B-Class. When choosing among these, factors such as warranty, price, and availability may also play a role, but it is critical not to compromise on the technical requirements.
One interesting aspect of AGM battery technology is that it uses a fiberglass mat to absorb the electrolyte, making the battery spill-proof and better suited to withstand vibration and high loads – features particularly valuable in modern vehicles with sophisticated electronics. Furthermore, AGM batteries generally have a longer lifespan compared to traditional batteries and are more resilient to deep discharge, which can occasionally happen in cars equipped with energy-intensive features like heated seats, navigation systems, or premium audio.
It’s also worth noting that when replacing the battery in a Mercedes-Benz B-Class W246, it’s recommended to have the battery registration process performed. This involves informing the car’s onboard computer about the new battery, allowing the charging system to optimize its operation for the battery’s health and longevity. Skipping this step might lead to suboptimal charging or even premature battery failure, as the car’s energy management system won’t be calibrated to the new battery’s characteristics.
In summary, the best battery choice for a Mercedes-Benz B-Class W246 from 2011 onwards is a high-quality AGM battery with a capacity between 70 and 72 Ah and a CCA from 720 to 760 A, to support the demands of the Start-Stop system and the vehicle’s advanced electronics. Sticking to reputable brands and ensuring proper installation and registration will help ensure years of trouble-free motoring, while also maximizing the efficiency and environmental benefits of the Start-Stop technology. Choosing the right battery is not just about maintaining reliability but also about supporting the car’s state-of-the-art features that set the B-Class apart from more conventional vehicles.

I own a merc b class w246 180 diesel automatic.
2016 reg.
I have a problem with the stop start because of low battery.
Can I fit a higher AH battery and will the alternator be able to charge it.
Perhaps a 80 AH battery might solve the problem.
You can fit larger battery if there is enough space. For alternator it doesn’t matter. But I think it will not solve your problem. Please remember that there are two batteries in your car – starter battery and auxiliary battery. You should check both of them and charging voltage at battery. You can also measure the car-off current draw.
My 2013 B180 W246 has an OEM battery with 800CCA 80Ah AGM performance specification. It is 315mm in length. Happy to share a photo if you need it.
