VW Tiguan 2 (from 2016) – batteries

Selecting the right battery for the Volkswagen Tiguan II, manufactured from 2016 onwards, is key to maintaining the performance and reliability of this modern SUV. As all engine variants in this generation are equipped with Start-Stop technology, choosing a battery with the proper construction and electrical capabilities is crucial. The battery must be able to handle frequent engine restarts and support numerous onboard electronic systems typical of today’s vehicles.

For the 1.5 TSI ACT petrol engines, whether producing 96 kW or 110 kW, as well as the 1.4 eHybrid version, the recommended battery type is EFB (Enhanced Flooded Battery). These engines require batteries with a capacity between 60 and 65 Ah and a cold cranking amperage from 560 to 640 A. Some compatible models include Bosch S4 E05, Exide EL600, Lucas LE027, Varta D53, and Halfords EFB 027. EFB batteries are designed to support moderate Start-Stop usage and are an economical yet reliable choice for smaller engines.

The 1.4 TSI petrol engines and all 2.0 TSI 4Motion variants, ranging from 92 to 180 kW, require more powerful EFB batteries rated between 70 and 75 Ah, with a cold cranking capacity of 650 to 760 A. These vehicles benefit from examples like Bosch S4 E08, Exide EL700, Varta E45, Lucas LE096, or Halfords EFB 096. The stronger capacity ensures reliable starting even during winter and under heavier electrical loads, which is especially important in 4Motion all-wheel-drive models.

For the Tiguan R with 235 kW of power, an EFB battery in the same 70–75 Ah range is still sufficient, though it’s recommended to choose a premium model due to the higher electrical demands of this performance variant. Batteries like Exide EL700 or Varta N70 offer high cycling durability and faster recharge capability, which suits the dynamic characteristics of the R version.

The diesel engines show more variation in battery requirements. The 2.0 TDI SCR 4Motion models with 176 kW, as well as the 2.0 TDI 4Motion with the same power, require AGM (Absorbent Glass Mat) batteries. These high-performance diesels need 70 to 72 Ah and a cold cranking amperage between 720 and 760 A. AGM batteries are designed to withstand frequent charge and discharge cycles, making them ideal for vehicles with intensive Start-Stop activity and demanding electronics. Examples of suitable AGM batteries include Bosch S5A 08, Exide EK720, Lucas LF096, and Varta E39.

Other diesel variants, such as the 2.0 TDI with 85 kW or 110 kW, use EFB batteries with a 70–75 Ah capacity and 650–760 A cold cranking power. These models perform well with batteries like Lucas LE096, Bosch S4 E08, and Varta E45. It’s important to note that some mid-power 2.0 TDI engines with 140 kW or 147 kW might come with either an EFB or AGM battery, depending on factory configuration. In such cases, it is best practice to check the currently installed battery and replace it with one of the same type.

One interesting aspect of battery selection for the Tiguan II is the variety of engine outputs and drivetrain layouts, which affect the required battery specification. Moreover, due to the Start-Stop system and energy recovery features, the electrical load is significantly higher than in earlier generations. Therefore, using a high-quality battery that meets the original equipment specifications is not only essential for performance but also for long-term reliability.

In summary, every VW Tiguan II model demands either an EFB or AGM battery, depending on the engine version and factory equipment. Matching the correct battery type and performance rating is crucial, and using reliable examples such as Bosch, Exide, Varta, Lucas, or Halfords ensures consistent performance. Checking your vehicle’s existing battery label before replacement is always a good idea to ensure full compatibility and avoid unexpected issues.
