Choosing the right battery for the Toyota Auris I, manufactured between 2006 and 2012, requires attention to engine type, the presence of start-stop technology, and specific technical and physical requirements. The first generation Auris came in a wide variety of petrol and diesel engine configurations, some of which have additional considerations such as unique terminal sizes or mounting types. Understanding these distinctions ensures a reliable, long-lasting battery installation.
Most petrol engine versions of the Auris I, including the 1.33 Dual-VVTi, 1.4 VVTi, 1.5, and 1.6 engines, all without start-stop systems, share similar battery requirements. These vehicles typically use conventional lead-acid batteries with a capacity between 50 and 54 Ah and cold cranking amps ranging from 420 to 540 A. Commonly compatible battery models include examples such as Bosch S40 02, Exide EB500, Lucas LP079, and Varta C22. These models offer dependable performance for daily driving and moderate electrical loads, making them well-suited for most standard Auris users.
One exception is the 1.33 Dual-VVTi version equipped with start-stop functionality, which calls for a more advanced battery type. Vehicles with start-stop systems require batteries that can handle repeated engine starts and partial state-of-charge conditions, which standard lead-acid batteries cannot endure. In this case, EFB (Enhanced Flooded Battery) technology is recommended. A battery with 60 to 65 Ah capacity and 560 to 640 A starting current, such as the Exide EL600, Lucas LE027, or Varta D53, is appropriate. These batteries provide extended cycle life and faster recharging, helping to support fuel-saving start-stop operations.
The 1.8 Hybrid version of the Auris is somewhat unique. While it does not use a start-stop system in the traditional sense, it requires a much smaller auxiliary battery—typically between 35 and 40 Ah, with a CCA of up to 360 A. These batteries are usually placed in the trunk or rear area and have thinner terminal posts (type 3), a feature that differs from most standard European applications. The mounting format is also B0, meaning the battery does not have a bottom hold-down ledge. Compatible examples include the Lucas LP054, Exide EB356, and Varta A14. It’s important to ensure that both terminal type and mounting configuration match precisely, as hybrids have more limited installation space.
Moving on to the diesel lineup, the 1.4 D-4D requires a lead-acid battery in the 60 to 65 Ah range with a CCA of up to 640 A. Models like the Bosch S40 05, Exide EA640, Lucas LS027, or Varta D15 can deliver the necessary power to start a diesel engine reliably, even in cold weather. These batteries are known for their robust build and good resistance to discharge, which is crucial for compression ignition engines.
For the larger 2.0 D-4D and 2.2 D engines, more powerful batteries are necessary. With requirements ranging from 74 to 78 Ah in capacity and 680 to 780 A for cold cranking, these engines demand strong, reliable power. Suitable batteries include the Lucas LP096, Bosch S50 08, Exide EA770, and Varta E11. These higher-capacity models ensure the diesel engines crank easily and provide ample reserve power for all vehicle systems.
A noteworthy detail is the mounting format of some Auris variants. While most European vehicles use B13 mounting—where the battery has a ledge running around the bottom—certain Auris models use B0 instead. This type lacks side ledges and may require specific clamps or trays for secure installation. Ensuring compatibility here prevents vibration damage and improper securing of the battery.
In conclusion, selecting the right battery for the Toyota Auris I depends on the specific engine and technical setup. From small, uniquely designed auxiliary batteries in hybrid models to robust EFB and high-capacity lead-acid batteries for diesels, there are tailored solutions available. Using examples like the Lucas LP079 for petrol engines or the Exide EA770 for diesels can serve as a practical reference. Always match not just the technical specifications but also the mounting type and terminal layout to avoid installation issues and maximize reliability.

U can use also normal lead acid battery instead of efb battery if u dont use the start stop system?
No, you can’t. Normal lead acid battery will break very quickly.
Do I have to program or do some obd stuff when I change my 2011 1.6 auris battery
Hi, I have a 2008 D-4D Toyota Auris in Ireland, British import.
The battery is a 096 in it rather than the 027. Is that an issue?
Hi,
The larger battery (size 096) is not a problem. If the battery is properly mounted and fits in the holder, it’s all good.
Best regards.
