Peugeot 308 SW I (2007-2013) – batteries

When selecting a battery for the Peugeot 308 SW I manufactured between 2007 and 2013, it is essential to take into account the specific engine variant, the presence or absence of the Start-Stop system, and the type of fuel your vehicle uses. The Peugeot 308 SW I came with a range of petrol and diesel engines, as well as some featuring biofuel options. Each configuration has its own recommended battery capacity (measured in ampere-hours, Ah), as well as minimum and maximum cold cranking amperage (CCA), which reflects the battery's ability to start the car in colder temperatures. Battery technology has advanced over the years, so picking the right battery is not only about matching the size and type but also about ensuring optimal performance and durability for your driving habits and climate.

For petrol engines such as the 1.4 16V, which does not have a Start-Stop system, the manufacturer recommends a traditional lead-acid battery with a capacity ranging from 50 to 58 Ah and a cold cranking amperage between 420 and 540 A. As an example, suitable battery models for this engine might include Bosch S40 02, Bosch S50 02, Exide EA530, Exide EB500, Halfords HCB 012, Lucas LP079, Lucas LS012, Varta C22, and Varta C30. It is important to note that these are just example models and other equivalent batteries from reputable manufacturers could also be used as long as they offer similar specifications.

If you drive the 1.6 16V or 1.6 Turbo petrol engines, or even the 2.0 Bioflex version, and your car is not equipped with Start-Stop technology, you should opt for a battery with a slightly higher capacity, generally between 60 and 65 Ah and a CCA from 540 to 640 A. For these engines, typical compatible battery examples include Bosch S40 05, Bosch S50 05, Exide EA640, Exide EB620, Halfords HCB 027, Lucas LP027, Lucas LS027, Varta D15, and Varta D24. Again, the type should be lead-acid, which remains a reliable and cost-effective choice for vehicles without Start-Stop functionality.

Switching to diesel options, the 1.6 HDi without Start-Stop also fits the same battery range as the larger petrol engines, demanding a 60-65 Ah battery with 540-640 A CCA. The same example models as above will fit this configuration. However, if your 1.6 HDi or 1.6 e-HDi is equipped with a Start-Stop system, you will need a more advanced battery technology to handle the frequent engine restarts and higher electrical loads. For these versions, an AGM (Absorbent Glass Mat) battery is strongly recommended, as it is designed for deep cycling and better durability. These batteries in the Peugeot 308 SW I should provide between 70 and 72 Ah, with a CCA ranging from 720 to 760 A. Example models that fit this requirement include Bosch S5A 08, Exide EK700, Exide EK720, Halfords AGM 096, Lucas LF096, and Varta E39. AGM batteries are more expensive than standard lead-acid batteries, but their superior performance makes them indispensable for vehicles with advanced electrical systems.

For the 2.0 HDi diesel engine without Start-Stop, you should look for a robust lead-acid battery with a capacity between 74 and 78 Ah and a higher CCA range of 680-780 A, ensuring reliable starting power even in harsh winter conditions. Example compatible batteries in this category include Bosch S40 08, Bosch S50 08, Exide EA770, Exide EB740, Halfords HCB 096, Lucas LP096, Lucas LS096, Varta E11, and Varta E44.

One interesting fact is that the evolution of battery technology, especially the introduction of AGM and EFB (Enhanced Flooded Battery) types, was largely driven by the automotive industry's move towards fuel efficiency and reduced emissions. The Start-Stop system, which automatically shuts down and restarts the engine at traffic stops, places much higher demands on the battery, necessitating the use of more resilient technologies like AGM.

When replacing the battery in your Peugeot 308 SW I, always check the physical dimensions and terminal layout to ensure a proper fit. It is wise to choose a battery from a reputable brand, as this can affect both reliability and warranty support. Additionally, some modern vehicles may require battery registration or programming after installation, especially if equipped with Start-Stop systems, to ensure that the car’s energy management system works correctly with the new battery.

In summary, always consider your engine type, presence of Start-Stop, and climate when choosing a battery. Using a battery with the correct specifications ensures not only smooth operation but also helps maintain the longevity of your vehicle’s electrical components. And remember, the sample battery models mentioned above are only examples; there are many other suitable options available depending on your preferred brand and budget.
